Este artigo constitui o resultado de estudos, pesquisas e observações acerca da identificação de possíveis dificuldades que os docentes encontram ao utilizar os jogos como um dos recursos para trabalhar os conteúdos de Matemática com os anos iniciais do ensino fundamental. Partindo do pressuposto de que esses recursos propiciam maior interação no relacionamento interpessoal, no desenvolvimento cognitivo, psicomotor, além de proporcionar uma aprendizagem prazerosa e significativa, objetivamos investigar esse tema a fim de identificar se os docentes utilizam os jogos como ferramenta de ensino e, em caso negativo, os motivos da não utilização. Esta pesquisa é de caráter qualitativo, tendo como público alvo os/as docentes do ciclo de alfabetização das redes de ensino municipais e estaduais do município de Serra (ES). A metodologia usada para coleta de dados foi por meio de observações e formulário de pesquisa em que os/as docentes foram convidados a responderem e indicarem os seis motivos mais relevantes para a não utilização dos jogos. Nos baseamos nas contribuições teóricas de KISHIMOTO (2000), KAMII (1995) e MIORIM (1988). Com base nas observações concluímos que os/as professores/as priorizam a alfabetização linguística, deixando em segundo plano o ensino da Matemática. É marcante na metodologia a não utilização de jogos e a supervalorização da memorização e do abstrato no processo de construção do conhecimento.
