O CVV E A PREVENÇÃO DO SUICÍDIO: PERSPECTIVAS DE GÊNERO

Abstract

The high suicide rates make this a relevant topic for public health and for society as a whole. Besides state policies, Brazil has a non-profit association called Centro de Valorização da Vida (CVV), which operates all over the country. This article aims to investigate how CVV deals with gender issues in its suicide prevention work. To achieve this goal, an exploratory research with qualitative approach was carried, crossing bibliographical research with interviews with three CVV volunteers. To the bibliographical survey, data obtained from books and online databases such as Scielo, Scholar Google and Bvs-psi was used. It was also carried out a statistical survey about death by suicide and suicidal attempts, in which one can observe that the number of attempts is higher among women, while the completed suicide is most common among men, with tendency to use more aggressive methods. Interviews show that such gender differences are not taken into account for the coping with suicide, since the CVV philosophy is based on the idea of not individualizing the questions brought by each person. However, it is possible that even if there are no specific protocols for women and men attendance, the identification the gender aspects related to suicide should be observed by the institution, in order to improve the quality of their work and its effectiveness in prevention of suicide act.
