Abstract

In general, cancer patients have important needs and dental problems that need to be taken care of before oncotherapy. The objective of dental treatment is to eliminate or stabilize oral conditions to reduce local and systemic infection during and after cancer treatment. It is also important to monitor the possible occurrence of sequelae due to oncotherapy treatment that includes chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The objective of this literature review is to explore oral conditions, the prevalence of sequelae and how these patients should be treated in conjunction with a multidisciplinary team. In a clinical evaluation of the entire sample, the need for intervention in oral health was indicated. Mucositis and xerostomia are the most common complications among the patients examined. Among them, the frequency of xerostomia was more evident in patients with combined oncological therapies. These facts reinforce the importance of the dentist's participation in the multidisciplinary team involved in the treatment of oral cancer, which has a positive impact on the quality of life of patients.
