The use of Removable Partial Prosthesis (PPR) is a great ally in oral
rehabilitation, as it is an option with satisfactory results as it restores esthetics
and function to the patient, with a lower cost when compared to other
rehabilitation treatments. Objective: The objective of this study is to carry out a
bibliographic survey on the objective of reporting the clinical behavior and
longevity of removable partial dentures, in addition to identifying the main
factors that influence the behavior and longevity of these dentures.
Methodology: A bibliographic survey was carried out in the PubMed and Scielo
databases, using as search terms in different combinations: Removable partial
denture, Longevity of dental prostheses, Oral hygiene, Periodontal disease.
Twenty-six articles published in English between 1984 and 2020 were selected.
Results: The good use of PPR and its longevity is related to the planning of the
prosthesis and good oral hygiene, avoiding the creation of biofilm reservoirs and
promoting occlusal forces that dissipate in a way that does not generate bone
resorption, thus leading to treatment failure. Conclusion: The use of PPRs
itself does not cause damage to teeth and periodontium if properly planned, a
follow-up with the dentist should be recommended in order to control the biofilm,
oral hygiene guidelines and care with PPRs should always be passed on to
patients. It was pointed out in the literature that the factors that most influence
the longevity of dentures are structural failures and loss of dental elements. The
average survival rate found in the literature is 64.57%. |
